212 - “You Have Captured My Heart with One Glance” Song of Solomon 1-8

116:  1 - GOD TAKES THE HAND OF THE HELPLESS
I love God because He listened to me, listened as I begged for mercy. He listened so intently as I laid out my case before him. Death stared me in the face, hell was hard on my heels. God takes the side of the helpless; when I was at the end of my rope, he saved me.

I said to myself, "Relax and rest.
Soul, you've been rescued from death;
Eye, you've been rescued from tears
Foot, you've been kept from stumbling."
I'm striding in the presence of God,
Alive in the land of the living!

Something about these verses stirs up something so good in me.  Rescued by a very Good God.

Striding in His Presence in the humdrum and holy business of this day.  Alive!  And, despite a ton of bad luck!  Ha.

Psalm 117:  1 - 5  GOD IS MY CHAMPION
Praise God, everybody! Applaud God, all people! His love has taken over our lives; Pushed to the wall, I called to God; from the wide open spaces, he answered. God's now at my side and I'm not afraid; who would dare lay a hand on me? God's my strong champion; "The hand of God has turned the tide!

Brings to my mind:  The LORD is my Shepherd, I shall not want.  So what does that mean as I read these verses about a Present God?  Maybe the only thing we know will never let us go is God. Listen to my life.  What do I want more than my Shepherd?

211 - "The Answer Is Not Holding Your Tongue But Holding On To Your God" Ecclesiastes 9-12

Before the years draw near.
Before the sun and the light and the moon and stars are darkened
Before the clouds return after the rain
In the day when the keepers of the house tremble
Those who look through the window are dimmed
And the earth returns to dust as it was.
Before all that happens, know this
Vanity of Vanities.  All is vanity.
Fear God and Keep His Commandments.
And God records this to show us the reality of our days.

Cast your bread upon the waters.
Even 7.  Even 8.
Even when it seems to be spent for nothing, not much.
Give freely!  Give your money away; Give your time away.
Eccl 11:1

So, let's pay attention to what really matters, first things first
Come to the Creator before He becomes Your Judge of every secret thing.
The end of the matter.  It's our whole duty.

Father, help us to see with spiritual eyes today what is in front of us.
We all will face judgment.  May I be way more concerned this day
with coming to You and loving You and leaving my life in Your Hands.

Eccl 10:14 The answer is not holding your tongue but holding on to God.

Eccl 11:6 So
Sow your seed in the morning.
Sow your seed in the evening.
You never know!

Words multiply.
People divide.

Amid all the noise of this celebrity society in which we live,
to Whom am I listening?
I find myself still trying to change people.
And I find people trying to change me.
I see the look of disapproval, of disdain.
And my default goes to defense.
Oh God! Help me to repent in the moment I hear.
May we all go back to the conclusion:
Ecclesiastes 12:13 - Fear God and Keep the Word.
Draw up that Empty Chair and listen to the Voice so Dear

Dear Father, I am so defensive---and so are the others.  But I can do something about me.  Help each one of us with our desires for righteousness to really listen for Your Voice today.  Love covers a multitude of sins.  So, when I cannot get over the grievances, the gestures gone awry, then let me realize it is Your Voice calling me to repent.  Those times when people annoy, disrupt, condescend, and get away with it.  May I let it go for it is in Your Hands.

PHOTO:  The setting sun found me sitting alone under a bridge at dusk.  Today is our 44th anniversary. Kind of hard to believe. Kind of wonderful we made it together for Him. Waiting for the Empty Chair to be taken.  And it was.  And there is never an empty chair at home with Bob by my side---my everything in this life.

210 - "Redress Those Hurtful Things That Happened and Arm Yourself" Ecclesiastes 5-8

Redress all those hurtful things that have happened to you and arm yourself against the "mischief" that you could run havoc wit
h. It is the Eternal Counsel Who will work good out of this in your life.  That's what Solomon says in Ecclesiastes 7:  Take care of your own reputation; avoid all dangerous extremes; be mild and tender toward those who have been injurious to you; and lament your own sin as that which is more vexatious than anything anyone has ever done to you.  Amen.

Why can I not listen to my own words I write this day?  I am way too quickly provoked in my spirit and the anger resides in my lap. Eccl 7:8-9.  "Do Not Say: Why were the old days better than these?" It is wise not to ask such questions.

Do not be overrighteous. Eccl 7:15.  It is good to avoid all extremes.  There is no one who does what is right and never sins.

"DO NOT PAY ATTENTION TO EVERY WORD PEOPLE SAY or you may hear your servant or your kid cursing you----for you know in your heart that many times you yourself have cursed others." Eccl 7:20-21.

That's it.  Anger in my lap.  Overrighteous on my mind.  Hanging onto every word friends and family speak.  Why can I not stop it?  Romans 7 is why.

209 - "Be Even in the Events of Your Life" Ecclesiastes 1-4

Eccl. 1:1 - It's smoke!  Spitting in the wind.  How does Solomon, the wisest man who ever lived, amass silver and gold and the treasure of kings and refuse his heart no pleasure (2:8)...and arrive at the conclusion:  I hate life (2:17).  Smoke.  Chasing after the wind.  What was Solomon missing in all his stockpiled wisdom and knowledge? Why was his heart not stirred with hope?  Is my heart stirred this day with hope or despair over my circumstances?  Solomon was desperate for what?  He couldn't get answers to his questions, could he? Maybe it wasn't the answers that the wise Solomon wanted.  "Until you stop running from real darkness into artificial light, until you hear the bad news that life is empty, that you are empty, you will not hear the GOOD NEWS My Son came to bring...I lower you into the depths of despair to lift you into the heights of joy.  The way up is the way down.  There is no other way.  You will not hear My song of love until you hear no other music."  66 LL.  What music am I listening to that keeps me from hearing His Song of Love?  It could be literal music or music to my ears or music to my heart or music to my eyes that keeps me from hearing His Song of Love. "Every moment of your life is a perfectly tuned note in the Eternal Harmony."  That is if I have ears to hear.  Let those scales fall off my eyes.  Let me hear the music of heaven.o

Eccl 2:24 - Enjoy the good of your labor.  Be even in the events of life---not leaning in hope that this will make me happy nor sinking in despair that this has happened.  Walk into the events of this day on purpose expecting God.  There is a time for every event under heaven. Eccl 3:1. God has put the event of Eternity in our hearts. Eccl 3:11. Solomon penned these words in his event search, his trial of every commodity, every experience, every person. All Futility. Nothing new under the sun. No new words either. There is a Season. And a Time. We cannot cover up the emptiness of our existence, if it be so, and live with the illusion of satisfaction. Today.  "Emptiness is covered by distraction. Loneliness is numbed with sociability. Futility is denied in activity. Premature and superficial satisfaction with the good things of life prevents My people from grasping the incredible news that My reality of joy, community, and meaning has invaded theirs." The ultimate good is living for God's Glory but the words run cheap.
May we only be satisfied with seeing Your Likeness in our lives and the lives of those we touch.  Help us to see through the thin veneers varnished on our events.  Illusions exposed.

208 - "Clothed With Strength & Dignity" Proverbs 27-31

 Sons and Daughters and Grandkids,

This Proverbs 31 chapter is about the virtuous woman.  This verse is written by God for all of us, sons and daughters, and children.

Clothed with strength and dignity;
you can laugh at the days to come.
Proverbs 31:25

So, smile at the future.  It looks awful bright for all of you.  Because.  It holds future days clothed in prayer; dressed in hope; showing in beauty.  I'm praying for each of you.

What verses linger with you from Proverbs?

I want to reflect on what it means to try not to figure out everything on my own but to run to God (3:5), to guard my heart (4:23), to write His Word on the back of my hand and awake and get ready for Him each morning (7:4), to not explode in anger but shrug off insults and stop letting people know they annoy me (12:16), to know that I can laugh and ache at the same time without hypocrisy (14:13), to remember that God doesn't miss a thing (15:3), to overlook an offense and bond a friendship (17:9), to see a Powerful Advocate at work every day (23:11), to not work myself into the spotlight (25:6), to not call attention to myself (27:2), to know what it means that my face mirrors my heart (27:19), to never whitewash my sin (28:13), and to live clothed with strength & dignity and face tomorrow with a smile.

The unexamined life isn't worth living.  These verses strengthen my resolve to want to be holy.  There is so much hope for our sin.  "With God's help, I shall become myself."  S.K.  "Continue asking your questions. They are good. But stop demanding answers. Live those questions long enough in My Presence until you run out of words. You will then catch a brief glimpse of who I AM that will seal your lips."

Are my lips sealed?  There is only a God-shaped life (Prov 11:28), "a narrow road that exposes foolishness, crushes arrogance, whets appetities for holiness, releases love, and fills with hope."  66LL.   There is so much hope for our sin.  Deeply encouraged as we close the pages of this book on this Narrow Road.

PHOTO:  Zekey comes to visit us this summer.  Or, rather, I went and got Zekey to come back to Austin to visit us and Pops delivered him back home.  I hope oh so many words from the Bible linger in every single person reading this!  It is your oxygen.  Live it til you run out of words.

207 - "What Steals Your Peace?" Proverbs 23-26

Through patience a ruler can be persuaded, and a gentle tongue can break a bone. Proverbs 25:15 Why is it we think that the force of our words wield victory? It is the motive of our words that break the bank. And the motive must be patience and mildness to hear others out, and wait for the occasion to present. Patience ~ Bear the heat of the conversation, without becoming heated up and wait for an opportunity. Mildness - Speak softly, mildly, humbly. No lightning words which can't even pierce the skin. Soft words melt the flesh. Through patience and a gentle tongue. The plumb line of the Word of God is the most important measure in your life. Proverbs 25:28 says: "Like a city whose walls are broken through is a person who lacks self-control." This text paints the picture of the state of our society when the walls are compromised. Defenseless. It is a metaphor of human nature as it is today; human nature as it can be in Christ; and human nature as it will be in heaven. Whatever the cost. I pray that we will all be controlled by self-control.  The right way.  Defend that city of your soul.

We put ourselves forward
Cause we are curved inward.
We covet, we need what we see.
We hold, won't let go, let things be.

What steals your peace
and lets your city doors fling open?
A robbery in broad daylight.
We won't give up our things, our plans.
Let us give up ourselves to the Holy God.
Let us ask Him for Col 1:29.

This day, something or someone will steal my peace?  It should never be but my struggle is not with flesh and blood but with powers of this world.  May we give ourselves over to You from the first flutter of the opening eye to the closing of the same.  It is the Energy of Christ that is so powerfully at work in each one of us.  Come, Lord Jesus, be our Peace and Power causing us to walk in Your Word.

206 - “Two Beautiful Things Better Than Money” Proverbs 20-22

Here are two beautiful things to desire more than money:
A good name and good favor.
"A good name is to be more desired than great wealth,
Favor is better than silver and gold."
Proverbs 22:1

A good name opens doors to a person's heart where riches only meet their physical needs. To be well beloved is far better than the gain of gold. Just love this. It speaks to a need deep within me that it is all right to want to be beloved for the right reasons.

And God says, "Incline your ear" and hear these words of the wise and apply your heart to His Knowledge. Prov 22:17.

Oh! That our trust may be in you, O LORD, always.
This event. This moment. This day.
For You say in 22:19:
You have made this known to us. Today. Even to me. Help us find this word.

205 - "Becoming Myself" Proverbs 16-19

Proverbs is the Shame of Exposure or the Appeal of Wisdom.  I'm being haunted or hunted.  "With God's help, I shall become myself."  Soren Kierkegaard.

Proverbs 16
1 Mortals make elaborate plans, but God has the last word.
2 Humans are satisfied with whatever looks good; God probes for what is good.
7 When God approves of your life, even your enemies will end up shaking your hand.
9 We plan the way we want to live, but only God makes us able to live it.
"To humans belong the plans of the heart,
but from the Lord comes the proper answer of the tongue.

All a person’s ways seem pure to them,
but motives are weighed by the Lord.

Commit to the Lord whatever you do,
and he will establish your plans."

Proverbs 16:1-3

I am not sufficient in my own strength, my own plans, my own voice to think that I can do life on my own.  It is the renewing grace of God that gives me hope to move in His Sufficiency.  My current burdens are way too heavy.  The word "commit" means "to roll" those monstrous loads right onto Him.  Here goes.

Proverbs 17
9 Overlook an offense and bond a friendship; fasten on to a slight and—good-bye, friend!
The eyes of a fool are on the ends of the earth." Proverbs 17:24.
27 The one who knows much says little; an understanding person remains calm.

Proverbs 18
15 Wise men and women are always learning, always listening for fresh insights.
21 Words kill, words give life; they're either poison or fruit—you choose.
22 Find a good spouse, you find a good life—and even more: the favor of God
24 Friends come and friends go, but a true friend sticks by you like family.

Starting a quarrel is like breaching a dam;
so drop the matter before a dispute breaks out.
Proverbs 17:14
"What danger there is
in the beginning of strife!
Resist its earliest display;
and leave it off,
if it were possible,
before you begin. M.H.

How have I missed most of my life the Truths I now see much more clearly. My experience was like the verse in Mark 8:24 where a blind man sees for the first time---but he sees "trees walking" and so did I. Alive but frozen in some ways. But, now I see. Yes, I really see.  "Place no hope in the experience of satisfaction now.  If you do, you are shifting away from the hope held out in the gospel of Jesus Christ." Larry Crabb

Where are my eyes? Do they seek satisfaction on this earth? Or do I live for another world? If I separate myself in any way, any kind, I seek my own desire.

"Do you ponder all I have created and recognize a wisdom you lack?  Do you observe life and see your God whose Sovereign Power shuts your mouth, whose uncompromising Love opens your ears to hear Me speak?  If not, you have no fear of Me.  You have not even the beginnings of wisdom?"  66 LL.  Do I really fear God?  Is my hand over my mouth?

204 - "The Eyes of the Lord Keep Watch" Proverbs 12-15

The eyes of the LORD
are in every place
keeping watch
on the evil
and the
good.

Proverbs 15:3

Socrates said that an unexamined life is not worth living.  One cannot read the proverbs without feeling a Holy Searchlight revealing, as Crabb calls it, "the Shame of Exposure or the Appeal of Wisdom."  Romans 2:4 says it is the Kindness of our God that leads us to repent. I can't stop thinking about verses like one we read yesterday in Proverbs 12:16 about fools on a short fuse exploding in anger instead of being prudent and quietly shrugging off the insults.  Oh, that's how I want to live with a Quiet Heart.  Fight or Flight takes over in me.  God, please give me and my friends here a quiet heart (Psalm 131:2) in our mess.  The verses of Proverbs haunt and allure. In today's reading I was stirred in shame and appealed by several verses.

Somewhere, I've picked up the notion that I have to keep an eye out for myself, my kids, my world.  Make sure we are all being treated like we are supposed to be treated.  Entitlement---we deserve good, better, best.

It is freeing to take a step back and recognize there are eyes in every place keeping watch.  The verse deals with not just over things but over people---evil and good.  We are "kept" people.  And every single person we deal with has been thought about in great detail and designed by God just the way they are.  Maybe not in all their redeemed state.  But always a marked person created by God.  And God will use the evil and good in our own lives.

Behold.  The Omniscient and Omnipresent Jehovah watches over this day as though He is looking down from a tower---so, the verb intimates.  A Watchtower with a God Who knows all, sees all, and is very present still, moving into our lives.  Hallelujah!

Proverbs is the Shame of Exposure or the Appeal of Wisdom.  Larry Crabb. I'm being haunted or hunted.  "With God's help, I shall become myself."  Soren Kierkegaard.

Proverbs 13:
   2 The good acquire a taste for helpful conversation;

Proverbs 14
     3 Frivolous talk provokes a derisive smile;

Proverbs 15
   3 God doesn't miss a thing—

PHOTO:  This UT tower means something to me.  And the thought that God beholds our lives as though watching high from a tower is just beautiful to me.  Provision.  Care.  Presence.  Jehovah God keeping watch over all that falls.

203 - "A Soul Formed By the Word" Proverbs 8-11

What's the answer for my great need?

Watching and Waiting at Wisdom's Gate.
Count me present.
Your attendance is your happiness.
You don't have to wait long. Just knock.

"Blessed are those who listen to Me,
watching daily at my doors,
waiting daily at my doorway.
For those who find me find life
and receive favor from the Lord. Proverbs 8:34-35

"The word of God is two-fold and so is wisdom; for a word without wisdom is of no value, and wisdom without a word is of little use. Divine revelation is the word and wisdom of God---pure religion, undefiled, is built upon it. Well worthy of acceptance. Proverbs 8:1-2.

Wisdom cries aloud from the whispers to the clamors of conscience. Christ is in our hearts and He is in this Word. This Word revealed to us, in us. "It is the soul formed by the word. It is Christ formed in the soul." MH

Proverbs 8:1 "Does not wisdom call out? Does not undertanding raise her voice? At the highest point along the way, where the paths meet, she takes her stand; beside the gate leading into the city, at the entrance, she cries aloud: I raise my vloice to all mankind." "The word of God is two-fold, and, in both senses, is wisdom; for a word without wisdom is of little value, and wisdom without a word is of little use." Matthew Henry. Get wisdom.
Christ in the Word.
Christ revealed in you.

And you will know all the loveliness of God.
And His Love will be shed abroad in your hearts.
And you will have all the counsel in rough patches.

Wisdom calls out to you:
“To you, O people, I call out;
I raise my voice to all mankind.
You who are simple, gain prudence;
you who are foolish,
Set your hearts on Wisdom. Proverbs 8:6

PHOTO:  I love every minute with you, Bristol. We were at Mozart's in Austin. Praying for you this day that God's Word will form your world. Gal 4:19 - that Christ be formed in me, in you.

202 - "It Is By Loving, Not By Being Loved" Proverbs 4-7

Treasure up my commandments within you.
Write them on the tablet of your heart.
Blessed is the one who listens.
Waiting daily at my gate.
Fear the LORD.
Beginnings.
Wisdom.
Holy.
He.

Proverbs 7:3

Where we are enmeshed with the happenings of this world, would You grant us Your Power to move in love. The quote of George MacDonald comes to mind:  "It is by loving, and not by being loved, that one can come nearest to the soul of another."  Oh, dear Father, help us move this day to love by treasuring, writing, listening, waiting, watching, and fearing You not what's happening to us.  Make us a little more holy this day than we were yesterday.  Where we struggle, please help us to listen long and deep.

PHOTO:  View from 37,000 feet in the air where I tried to listen long today.  This vast expanse, God You suspend us all.  You keep.  You grasp.  You make this world work.  Make our hearts work today.  Your Words on the tablets of our hearts.  Unless You do it, we cannot.

201 - "Holiness Trumps Management" Proverbs 1-3

Don't be weary of God's reproof.
The Lord reproves those whom He loves.
Sickness. Trials. Testings. Temptation

Matthew Henry puts it this way:
"Should the Lord visit us with trials and sickness---let us not forget that the exhortation speaks to us as to children, for our good. Bind them around your neck."
"My son, do not despise the Lord's discipline or be weary of his reproof, for the Lord reproves him whom he loves as a father the son in whom he delights.   Proverbs 3:7
Henry goes on to say that those "who know themselves" find a lack of understanding like a bruised broken reed.  God will never break us beyond measure.

So, what's the point?
What to do?
Scripture interprets Scripture.  What is God saying to you through His Word?
Holiness weighs in more important than management.
Write His Words on the tablet of your heart so you will find favor and good success in the sight of God and man.  Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.  No bruised reeds here. May our holiness trump any kind of management involving our lack of understanding.

Proverbs 3:3-7  Don't lose your grip on Love and Loyalty.
Tie them around your neck; carve their initials on your heart. Earn a reputation for living well
   in God's eyes and the eyes of the people. Trust God from the bottom of your heart;
don't try to figure out everything on your own. Listen for God's voice in everything you do,

everywhere you go; He's the one who will keep you on track. Don't assume that you know it all.
   Run to God! Run from evil! Honor God with everything you own;
give him the first and the best.
... No need to panic over alarms or surprises.

I have lived a frenetic life at times---that's my default mode.  Someone please help me.  Someone please rescue me.  There's Only One Who can Rescue us from darkness.  May we be more concerned about being rescued from darkness than rescued from pain.  It doesn't come from a good place in my heart when I try to ease my pain, minimize my pain, silence my pain.  I've so wanted answers for my panic.  And here is my God saying:  Don't try to figure out everything on your own.  Listen for God's Voice."  Am I listening this day for His Still Small Voice?  Or am I trying to figure out life on my own?  Everything.  Everywhere.  Listen for His Voice today in the mundane and marvelous.  And go be Prov 3:29---God's Hand to someone this day.

Solomon was the wisest of men.
Yet, even Solomon had to wrestle with Wisdom.

It wasn't poured into his head through a sieve, through a spout.

It was delivered by His Maker, through his work.

Gaining wisdom.

Understanding words.

Receiving instruction.

Doing what is right and just and fair.

Giving prudence to the simple.

Giving knowledge to the young.

Adding learning to the wise.

Giving guidance to the discerning.

Understanding proverbs.

Proverbs 1:1-6

Wise words from a wise man seeking this all of his life.
There is Someone greater here than Solomon.
There is Christ found in these proverbs.
Christ is The Living Word.

200 - "God Uses Struggle To Uncover A Rest Beneath the Struggle" Psalm 144-150

As we close the Book of Psalms, what did our Beautiful God stir in you that comes to mind?  What is stronger in you?  What are you afraid of?  What is God stirring up?  What lingers?

Psalm 150:6 "Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.  We all have breath.  Even our praises are with trembling.

At this juncture of my life, I feel like I have fallen short in ways.  How arrogant to think if I had to do it all over again, I could do better---no, I'd just make different mistakes.  No perfect people.  Why am I so hard on myself? 66 LL says: No guarantees in life.  Only one:  God will lead me through even this to know Him better.  Thank you, Lord.

God is the One who rebuilds our lives,
Who regathers us when we distance ourselves.
He heals the heartbroken and bandages our wounds.
I need a Savior this night to heal my broken heart as I deal with some hard realities about my life.  Our Lord is great with limitless Strength; we'll never comprehend what He knows and does.  God puts the fallen on their feet again.  I'm standing up.

What lingers with me is that our desires to live are good but the road to get there can be a bad one.  "You assume I relieve struggle and replace it with rest.  But I use struggle to uncover a rest beneath the struggle that no anguish can destroy.  The struggle with fear and pain will continue.  Only in the storm will you know there is an anchor."  Do I feel that Anchor this night?

Incredibly grateful for these two So very grateful to you God for                                                              You rescue the wretched who have been thrown out with the trash.                                                                  You seat them among honored guests.                                                                                                        And you give the childless joy as the parents of children.

This week, I have wrestled about my life, my place, my heart---there is a verse that kept coming to mind:  Psalm 115:1 Not to us.  Not to us, but to your Name be Glory.  This life is not about me yet I am enmeshed in figuring it out.  Not to us but to your Name bring Glory!

PHOTO:  Thought about the twins many times while reading Psalms.  These Covid babies have inherited a crazy world.  May they find the Anchor of their soul forever.  And this Momma will always praise Him even in her current trembling. east to west, from dawn to dusk,
Keep lifting all your praises to God!  These older two grandkids are just the best! We could not have enjoyed the bats, the trampolines, the skating rink, the pool, the go karts, the arcades, the aquarium any more!!! Thanks for visiting us Zekey!  August 2023

199 - “Hedged In Behind & Before” Psalm 139-143

The LORD will accomplish what concerns me. 138:8

Though I walk in the midst of trouble, You will revive me. 138:7

LORD, You have searched me and known me. 139:1

You understand my thought from afar. 139:2
You scrutinize my path & my lying down. 139:3
You have enclosed me behind and before,
And laid Your hand upon me. 139:5
If I would count your thoughts, they would outnumber the sand.
When I awake, I am still with You.

O the Wonder.
O the Awe of it All.
BB Warfield in a famous sermon delivered in 1911 said:
"Familiarity with the things of God will cause you to lose your awe."

Have we spent so much time in strategic local church ministry planning that we have lost our wonder at the Sovereign Planner Who guides our every minute.
Have we spent so much time unpacking the theology of Scripture that we have forgotten the end game of personal holiness.  Have we spent so much time in discipling others that we are no longer amazed at the reality of having been chosen to be a disciple of Jesus Christ.  [Paul David Tripp]

Psalm 139:3 Make each of us bold with strength in our soul.

Psalm 139:23-24 Search me, O God, and know my heart;
Try me and know my anxious thoughts;
And see if there be any hurtful way in me,
And lead me in the everlasting way.

198 - "Either Cling to Me as I Am Or Who You Want Me To Be" Psalm 132-138

Remember our hardships endured.
Remember David's mantra:
I will not even sleep until
I find a place for the Lord.
Until I find a place for my Lord
in all that I do, in all that I am.
Psalm 132:5.

An author once said:
"Either cling to Me as I AM or
reshape Me into who you want Me to be."
Larry Crabb

I've seen a few suns set in this life.  And as I read these psalms, something stirs within.  David was despised by family & friends.  David never knew he would sit on a throne.  David worshipped.  Nothing mattered more to him than God.

The stakes are high to find a place for my Lord and not try to make Him fit into my life, my expectations, my rights.  Here is David, who suffered well, singing in the midst.  His passion for God is all-consuming his throne.  From caves to thrones, He worshipped.  And it didn't matter how hard he fell.  He preached to himself the Gospel of Grace as Tripp called it:  "Today in your private, life-interpreting conversation, will you preach to self the gospel of God's grace?"

PHOTO:  Another sun sets on the Washington Bridge as I worship you and pray for You to move in all of our lives.

"The more you see your own flaws and sins,
the more precious, electrifying, and amazing

God's Grace appears to you."  Tim Keller 135 God, you'll never be out-of-date. God, you stand up for your people.  God, you hold my hand through this wedding day.  Psalm 136 Your Love will never quit.  Psalm 137 We cried and cried and cried... Psalm 138 Thank You for what You have done!  Everything in me says "Thank You!"  Angels listen as I sing my thanks.  I kneel in worship this wedding morn.  Thank you for Your Love.  Most Holy is Your Name.  The moment I called out, You stepped in; You made my life large with Strength.  Would you do it again this day for all of us.  Make our lives a little larger.  And where people are attracted to our flesh, reveal to us the way of escape to let You step in.  Finish what you started in me,

197 - "Quiet My Soul in My Loss of What I Loved" Psalm 120-131

I will lift my eyes to the mountains ~ Psalm 121:1
But there is no help in the power & strength I find there.

My help comes from the LORD.
My transformed soul must quiet itself in my loss of what I loved,
in my disappointment of what I had hoped for,
in my sadness in how I am treated,
and in my suffering of what I had trusted.
My Help comes from the LORD Who made Heaven and Earth.
 Be quiet, o my soul.
No mountain, no power, no strength, other than My LORD.
He Who keeps me will not slumber this night. Psalm 121:3.
Compose and Quiet my soul!
I will not involve myself in great matters or in things too difficult for me. Psalm 127:2.

Psalm 28:2 I will find my help from Your Presence in my life, in my community, in my church. I will look to Your Sanctuary.

Come LORD Jesus, be Present here.
Make me like these mountains which cannot be moved.

196 - "Meaning and Mercy in Suffering" Psalm 119

I am like a wineskin in the smoke, I have not forgotten your Word. Psalm 119:83

Wine-bottles of the East are skins.                                                                                                               The custom was to hang the skin of wine in the smoke of a fire to mellow the wine and bring it to perfection.

I learned in school you always have to ask: So what's the point?

The psalmist finds consolation in this metaphor that my afflictions have "meaning" and "mercy."              They have been sent by the Creator to act on me like the smoke does on the wine.

The Tuck commentary says: Under all these afflictions, may we refuse to part with our faith.  Yet, we falter.  Yet, we don't forget the Word either.

R. Tuck says: "What seems to be in mind is a long waiting-time, which was also a time of suffering and strain."  Waiting for God.  Watching for God as this world passes away.

And Tuck says the major question is this:  "What was he doing during this hard waiting-time?" ...     Holding fast to his integrity;                                                                                                                  keeping obedience and trust;                                                                                                                persistently ordering his life according to the Divine statutes.

Send your Word, O God! And may we throw ourselves on the Divine rhetoric.

The Unfolding of the Word gives Light.
The entrance illuminates our understanding.
Doesn't depend on how bright we are or are not.
It gives understanding even to the simple.
The word "pentach" signifies an opening.
Someone said that metaphorically, it really means a "gate."
And when the Light dispels the darkness, and lights up our minds,
we enter the porch.
What happens when we enter in the house?
May we be so taken with the Word of God to delight, meditate, study, and marvel at it over and over and over.

Huram-abi knew how to work with iron, stone, gold, silver, bronze, wood.  He could do it all---engravings.  But all I can think of this day is that I want some iron in my soul.  I'm far too flappable, malleable, slippery, flacid.  The Holy Spirit knows how to put that iron in my soul.  And so, we pray.
Psalm 119: 175
Invigorate my soul , O God,
so I can praise You well,
use Your Decrees to put iron in my soul.

PHOTO:  Because the beginning is understanding for all of us. Light coming through an opening in the sky. A gate of wisdom for us this day.

195 - "Send The Word To Me" Psalm 108-114

Psalm 108 - Am I really awake or just trying to live an encouraging positive life?  Listen to your life!  Am I ready to raise a God-song?  If so, my soul must be awake or it's empty notes.  For the sake of the one you love so much, reach down and help me---answer me! Human help is pedestrian.

2 Thoughts Linger from Today's Reading:

Psalm 108 - AWAKENED TO LISTEN.   Listen to your life.   Listen to your world.

Psalm 109 - GOD'S HAND IS IN THIS.  Does my world recognize Your Hand is in this...
and if yes, then how do I respond to that?  My God, don't turn a deaf ear to my hallelujah prayer.

I'm at the end of my rope, my life in ruins.  Save me through your Wonderful Love.  Then they'll know that your hand is in this.  I so believe you wrote this psalm for me.  In some ways, I am at my wit's end but I believe your hand is in this.   It would be really good for me, I think, if others knew Your Hand was in this.

194 - "His Words Are Incarnate Words Fleshed Out In Us" Psalm 106-107

Psalm 107 speaks of our sin-sick souls.
About God Who sends a personal Word.
They cried to the Lord in their trouble...
and He saved them from their distress.
"He sent out His Word & healed them."
Psalm 107:20.

And, He stilled their storm to a whisper;
the waves of their sea were hushed.
Psalm 107:29.

We are healed by the word that comes
out of the mouth of God.
A Word does it.
Rescues.
That Word comes
from human messengers,
comes from angels unheard of,
comes from the very Word Itself,
maybe even a thought placed in our mind.
Stills my current storms to a whisper.
Hushes the present waves of my sea.
This word is like oxygen.
Send Your Word.
And He did:  "God knows your form."

Ezekiel, Ezri, Bristol, Mira, Tracer ...                                                                                                          Keep your eyes open for God, watch for his works; be alert for signs of His presence.

God speaks.
It may be in the humdrum of life or it may be in hurts that pierce our hearts and make our blood run cold.
God speaks.
"And the reason that His Words are Impossible to Capture in Human Language is of course that they are ultimately always Incarnate Words. They are words fleshed out in the everydayness, no less than in the crises of our own experience." (Buechner). Whether you heard him in the humdrum or hurts of this day, keep your eyes open for Him.  What sign was His Presence to you this day?

193 - “When Will You Come to Me, O God?” Psalm 101-105

"When will you come to me?" Psalm 101:2
Such an intriguing question.
Some commentaries think David penned this psalm
when he finally took the throne after waiting 25 years.
The psalm fits a "good magistrate" and a "good master."
When, God?
This is the householder's psalm. For all the places we lead.
No matter what our outward condition is---joy or sorrow.
Keep these words in your mind.  On repeat.
We must sing this psalm in our world.
This is how David would walk in his own house,
for he was still under the watchful Eye of God.

Our greatest goal in living in our homes is this.
That God may dwell there all our days.
We invited Him from the day we moved in.
Sometimes I feigned soul amnesia and forgot He was there.
Most days I knew it, breathed it, lived it.
It's over.  The last child flipped over the calendar.
I've thought much about what we left there in that home.
Thought much about what God did there.
I can't take it back and I wish I could in ways.
But we gave the best we had from where we sat and walked.
And all I can do is ask today:
When will you come to me, God? And a tear falls.

All those days brought me to this tear.  I want Him so.
So, what's the point:  Walk circumspectly under the
Hand of Providence, under the Watchful Eye of God. There are beautiful souls still living in my house. All are worthy of utmost respect.

One of the most unbelievable experiences I have had was when II Corinthians 1:8-10 happened to me.  I was burdened excessively, beyond my strength, so that I despaired even of life.  A troubled childhood, violence, gang rape, addictions, miscarriages, and then it happened---burdened excessively.  January 13, 2006.  "Indeed [I] had the sentence of death within so that I would not trust in [myself] but in God Who raises the dead."  II Cor. 1:8-9,  He did! He raised me up from the dead.  I didn't think I was going to make it through.  Oh! Make no mistake, He raised me up to life that I've never known.  More alive than I've ever been.  More aware of the sin within than ever.  It's called "The Great Divide." [Oswald Chambers] I have set my hope on God, not on this world.  And He will YET deliver me even more.

"God produces a providential crisis where we have to decide---FOR or AGAINST, and from that point the "Great Divide" begins.  If the crisis has come to you on any line, surrender your will to Him absolutely and irrevocably."  Oswald Chambers My Utmost for His Highest January 1.

192 - "My Busy Thoughts Are Multiplying" Psalm 92-100

When my anxious thoughts multiply within me,

Your Consolations will delight my soul. Psalm 94:19

My heart was filled with various and perplexing busy thoughts.

I was, I am tormented with the cares and fears about my future state.

Reach for the Consolations when the branchings of the heart hit hard.

I had to go back to subbing at the public schools in Austin---a challenge.

When you get older, it's a different ballgame in life or maybe it's that I just still

have not found my niche of contribution.  Trusting God in the midst of the emptiness.

The comforts that delight our soul are at our fingertips—

*the promises of God in His Word

*the Word of God set home by the Holy Spirit on our souls,

*and all those memories of His Care and Kindness to each of us in days gone by.

The word for thoughts is used to describe branches of trees,

thick and entwined, showing just how perplexed and distressing our thoughts really are.

Praying for you and for me that God will open His Promises, His Word, and apply it to our souls.

Thank you, God.  This means so much that you would do this for us.

Can I let go and leave my hurts in His Hands?
Psalm 96 - God is coming to set everything right on earth.  (God said this 4 times.).  So, I can let go any insults, any harm done to me for my King will set it straight someday.

Am I arrogant in how I talk about other people?
Psalm 97:8 - Am I proud of my ragamuffin gods?  I hope not.

What's my password?
Psalm 100:1-4 - On your feet now—applaud God.  Sing yourselves into his presence. Enter with the password: "Thank you!"

PHOTO:  At a monastery in Budapest.  A sacred place of long ago where I step this day and feel the energy of the Spirit of God moving in my life.  Couldn't be more grateful juxtaposed to feeling such aloneness and lack of purpose.

191 - "Doing Math In The Wilderness and The Five-Fold Arms of God" Psalm 88-91

Bend an ear, God; answer me. I'm one miserable wretch! ...

Psalm 88 - God, you're my last chance of the day. I spend the night on my knees before you ...
Take notes on the trouble I'm in ...
You turned my friends against me ...
Blinded by tears of pain and frustration ...
My only friend left is Darkness ...
Pain.
Frustration.
What do I do with that?

You put the arrogant ocean in its place
You put your arrogant child in moments like today
that I may see into my heart.

I've thought a whole lot this year about the story of the Prodigal Son.  In his book about the prodigal, Henri Nouwen writes:  "Can I let the younger and older son grow in me to the maturity of the compassionate father?"  The father is who I must become, he writes.  As the father deals with his own anger and loneliness, his anger turns to solitude and his loneliness turns to gratitude.  I am that younger and older brother.  Frustration.  Anger.  Pain.   Can you grow both of my sides into a compassion that moves into the lives of others in the midst of my own mess?

Teach us to number our daysthat we may present a heart of wisdom. Psalm 90:12

One commentary says it this way:
In this wilderness world of ours,
may our lives be "a sanctified use of the sad dispensation."
Let the arithmetic find us Divine Guidance.
And may the counting result in much goodness every day.

Oh God! Cause us to come to you for wisdom.
That we may allot our time by by what You know.
That we may set store by time.

“That God would enable us to form such an estimate of life,
that we shall be truly wise;
that we may be able to act
"as if" we saw the whole of life.”

Oh the beauty of all the names of Psalm 91:1-2
The Most High
The Almighty
Jehovah
My Refuge
My Fortress.

If there breeds any doubt in the fragile nest of your thoughts,
tbe five-fold more assured of His Love in this verse for you.
Whatever the discussion, the danger, the dilemma, the distress, the difficulty, the dogma.
Whatever.
You have access to the Five-Fold Arms of God today.
Under the Divine Protection.
Under the Same God this day.

The Other PHOTO: The faces of the people in Budapest still haunt me.  So sullen.  So sad.  So striking.  The distrust of Communism still runs through the Danube River.  They are not a free people.  God raise them up to be like the father running for joy to his sons.

190 - "Open Your Mouth Wide" Psalm 81-87

I have this thought as I read my Bible every day:
"I hear a language I had not known." Psalm 81:4

This Bible I hold in my hand reads my life, reads me.
And I sense things that are not right within. I am visiting Kansas City this week. I love this family so much and want to be a blessing to them, a benefit to them, a beautiful place in their hearts. I long to do them good.
And I long to change---not me doing the changing.
But Him.

"In distress I called and You delivered me.
You answered me in the secret place of thunder."

I know.
Psalm 81:5

You relieved my shoulder of the burden.
You freed my hands from the basket.

I am the LORD, your God
Who brought you up out of this thing.

Will I listen to His Voice.
Will I submit to this new thing?

Yes, I do come to the Word every single day,
not as a "fix" for my life full of distress,
but as a "flame" white-hot with wonder.

And Crabb's words about Chronicles burn within:
"I invite you to delight in your distress.
Nothing else provides the same opportunity
to move strongly and joyfully into life
on the basis of My Promises Alone,
the Promises of My Presence now and
My Satisfaction forever.
Seizing that opportunity will free you
to passionately engage life for My Purposes with no demands."  66LL

I removed the burden from their shoulders; their hands were set free from the basket. Ps-81:7 and I rescued you,you out of a thundercloud; I tested you at the waters of Meribah. Hear me, my people, and I will warn you—-- if you would only listen to me, Israel! I am the Lord your God, who brought you up out of Egypt. Open wide your mouth and I will fill it. Psalm 81:10 The treasure of His Grace is inexhaustible. We could never open our mouths wide enough for His Hand.

PHOTO: God's Inexhaustible Grace is all over you! My four kids. I pray constantly that you would experience deeply than you can imagine His Grace multiplied on Grace. That you would care more than anything about what matters most. That Inexhaustible Grace.

189 - "The Dark Days are Displays of His Love and Power" Psalm 78-80

In this uncertain world where we live, there is only One Who is Faithful and True. People will let us down. We will face loss in this world. We will never lose. He has defeated the enemy. He showed John a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne. Rev 22:1. The river of life here on earth is muddied, cursed. There will be no more curse. One Day Soon. So, keep this book open. It will affect your eternity. ToThey forgot what God had done.  Psalm 78:11

He parted raging waters and they crossed the sea
with waters piled up high on either side.
God left no footprints.
The sea closed back in a fury.
And, they forgot.

May mercy come quickly on us all.  Psalm 79

We say it a lot:  I love my people.  It strikes a chord with me.  Cause I feel like it's not my experience.  Don't we all want people to adore us?  So, this next verse catches me off-guard.  I am called to be someone's "people."  His People.  And it is the Only One we can trust.

"We are His People,
the sheep of His Pasture."
Psalm 79:13

So, when we are in prison, we need remember the bigger picture---the Mighty Display of our God for us that is in the "already happened" stage.  Fall back on "already" not on the "currents."

"The dark days of His People become the Prelude to unusual displays of the Lord's Love and Power." Charles Spurgeon.  Oh, it must be gonna happen!  Cause this people here are in dire straits.

DEAR GOD,  PLEASE CHANGE ME IN MY 10,000 MOMENTS THAT seem to be prison-like.  Help me see what is going on.  Help me remember Your Mighty Arm.  Help me ride The Prelude to display Your Love & Power.  Praying that we see a glimpse today.  I think I know how I could!

188 - "Nearly Missed Seeing His Goodness" Psalm 72-77

God, I reflect daily on what I'm doing with my life.
I do sometimes feel like I've been a beast before You. Nevertheless!
I am continually with You. You have taken hold of my right hand.
With Your Counsel You will guide me.
Whom have I in heaven but You? And besides You,
I desire nothing on earth.
My flesh and heart may fail, but God is the Strength of my heart.
Psalm 73:22-24.
Psalm 73:27 is the prayer of my heart this day:
But as for me, the nearness of God is my good.
With all my hearth and strength,
help me, this day, this circumstance, to make You my Refuge.
Not the solution to my problems.
Not the resolution of life's issues.
Not the crowning achievements that come our way.

May I find Refuge and Solace in You Alone.   72
Blessed always His blazing glory!  Yes and Yes and Yes.

No doubt about it! God is good— good to good people, good to the good-hearted. But I nearly missed it,
missed seeing his goodness.  I was looking the other way, looking up to the people at the top, envying the wicked who have it made.  No!  You're all I want in heaven! You're all I want on earth!

"Every heartache will create space that I alone can fill.  And I will.  You will learn to wait in Hope."  66 LL
I'm broken.  Can I meet you in your brokenness and wait with you in Hope?

187 - "Do Not Hasten" Psalm 67-71

The ancient world saw God in the mountains.

The going out of this day shouts joy.
Yet, like David, we all face needs.
David writes:
"Save me, O God!
For the waters have come up to my neck.
I sink in deep mire,
where there is no foothold.  Psalm 69:2.
Deep waters, where the flood sweeps over.
Weary, so weary with crying.
Parched throats.
Dimmed eyes.
Waiting for my God.
Psalm 69:1-3

"May all who seek You
rejoice and be glad in You."
May we all say
'God is great!' " Psalm 70:4
BUT
David says it:
"But I am poor and needy;
hasten to me, O God.
Do Not Delay!"

We all need Him so.

O Lord, Do not delay.  Please hasten to our words, our hearts.  We are all poor and needy this day.  May we see how we can accomplish nothing today except through Your Power.  When will you come to us? Seal our hearts in Your Grace today.  Steady our ways.  Sweep us off our feet.  Show up in ways we don't expect.  And may you find us surrendered.

What do I really think way down deep inside when my strength is spent?
Physical strength shot.
Emotional strength waning.
Do I worship?
Actually, days like today, I'm just trying to hold on and ask a Very Gracious God to help me see what surrounds me on days like today when my strength is spent. I spent it all last night. I am very aware that I awake with a fresh clean slate. But I don't want to spend the same strength again tonight.
It's actually a very good position to be in---dependent. Psalm 71:9
Forsake me not when my strength is spent. Psalm 71:20
God has made me see many troubles and calamities.
Why am I giving in to this weight of sin. My anger does not accomplish His righteousness.
Talking to myself.
He will bring me up again!
Revive me again---the word in the Greek for "revive" means: To breathe life into me.
That's it!
